Forty-nine Pounds of Toddler

May 25, 2010

Chloe and Emma survived their “18 month” (really more like 20 – still correcting for gestational age here) pediatric visit without too much angst.  Three shots a piece, but no real ill effects after a good nap.  After weighing them, it became clear that I’m not just a big sissy for having trouble toting them together everywhere.  Chloe was 23#3 oz, and Emma 25#10.  That’s 49 lbs!  No wonder my arms are tired.

In other news, I’m feeling inspired to start blogging more, and am feeling the need for a big overhaul.  I’m considering dropping the S-B name for something else entirely, but am at a bit of a loss.  I’d like something that summarizes or at least hints at my various roles/descriptors (mama, fake doctor*, domestic goddess**, afflicted with a severe lack of tolerance for nonsense) but I’m coming up short.  Suggestions?

* A patient recently asked me if we had any “real doctors” working.   The rest of the evening was spent referring to my attending as “real doctor” and to me as “fake doctor.”   Heh.

**Domestic goddess.  Right.  Have you seen my living room after the twinadoes get finished?  We all have to aspire to something, I suppose.

Resolutions Revisited

January 31, 2010

January Edition.

I figure if I check in with these each month, it will help me figure out where I need to make improvements.  (vs waiting until December and going “oh, crap, that was a resolution?”)

Goals for 2010:

1) Physical:

a) 300 days x 30 minutes on the Wii Fit. 6/31.  Craptacular.  Am shooting for 30 in February (have a few make-up days from illness I can use, based on Elaine‘s rules.)

b) 350 days On-Plan with Weight Watchers. 31/31.  Go me.  Down 18 lbs.  14 to go to get to pre-baby, then it’s time to lose the TTC weight.

2) Parental:

a) 30 minutes of quality time with the girls each day.  I’m working on this.  I’d say we’re there about 75% of the time.

b) 1 good photo shoot of the girls per week. Zero.  Totally forgot about this one.  Going for 4/4 in February!

3) Personal:

a) 50 grown-up, non-work books. I’ve finished one so far.  Need to report it to count it, though.  1/50.

b) 50 movies. 2/50.

4) Domestic:

a) 1 room de-cluttered and deep-cleaned per month. The living room is 75% done, and will finish that and do the dining room in February.

b) 1 laundry day per week. Humongous zero.

5) Creative:

a) 50 new recipes. 0/50.  Do I get points for the two I clipped at work from someone’s magazine and the one that’s been on my fridge for weeks?  No, sir, I do not.

b) 12 finished knitted objects. 1/12.  Need to post about it.

c) 1 finished cross-stitched item this year. The kit’s purchased, and hasn’t yet been started.

d) 50 finished scrapbook pages. Zip point nada.

6) Financial:

a) 50 weeks under budget ($100/week) for groceries. 4/4 weeks in January!  Only spent $25 on groceries this week.

b) 100% paid off credit card and student loan. Work in progress.  I should be able to make a nice dent this month with the childcare flex spending and some cash for work on my aunt’s (now sold) disgusting house.

Five Down, ??? To Go

January 21, 2010

Happy 5 year Blogiversary to me!

In the past 5 years I’ve gone from an apartment-dwelling new PA with a fish, living across the parking lot from Starbuck, to a house-owning mother of two with a dog and one of the most senior PAs in my department.  Life never quite turns out the way you plan, but I’m pretty darn happy with where we are so far.  Here’s to 5 more.

By The Numbers

January 4, 2010

I’m not going to call them resolutions.  How about…goals?  (And here I start to feel as though I’m channeling Capt Barbossa in Pirates of the Caribbean.  Guidelines… But I digress.)

Goals for 2010:

1) Physical:

a) 300 days x 30 minutes on the Wii Fit. So far I’ve done 1.  But have had a nasty cough (thank you, Mycoplasma pneumoniae) since January 2nd.  Will aim for improvement in future.  (Thanks for the idea, Elaine!)

b) 350 days On-Plan with Weight Watchers. 100 % so far.  With the breastfeeding points it’s not too hard, but lo will I weep when they get taken away.  Gotta get that baby weight off, though, one way or another.

2) Parental:

a) 30 minutes of quality time with the girls each day.  That sounds like nothing, but so much of our time is half-distracted, on-our-way to do something else, and I want to watch them, enjoy them, soak them up.  They’re only toddlers just this minute, and then they’ll be in college.

b) 1 good photo shoot of the girls per week. Not counting the little off-hand snaps.

3) Personal:

a) 50 grown-up, non-work books. Book report here, or it didn’t happen.  (Sorry Sandra Boynton and Dr. Tintinalli, but your respective works are NOT on the approved list.)

b) 50 movies. With popcorn.  I feel like I haven’t seen a non-Wiggles DVD in months.  That needs to change.

4) Domestic:

a) 1 room de-cluttered and deep-cleaned per month. I’m hanging in there with the day-to-day cleaning (mostly) but the deep stuff?  Just.  Never.   Happens.  As it is now, I have 12 rooms/zones that I can focus on this year.

b) 1 laundry day per week. Wash it all, dry it all, fold it all, and put it all away.  I’m tired of half-folded, half-put-away piles sitting, and to-be-washed piles sitting, and piles in general.  Blech.

5) Creative:

a) 50 new recipes. Will share, if it’s decent.  If not, will post a suitable warning.

b) 12 finished knitted objects. Pics (and pattern link) in this space.

c) 1 finished cross-stitched item this year. Pattern TBD.   Progress photos on the blog, time frame TBD.

d) 50 finished scrapbook pages. Saturday morning naptime for the girls = scrapping time for me.

6) Financial:

a) 50 weeks under budget ($100/week) for groceries. This may take some real calculator skills and creativity, but I’m up for it.

b) 100% paid off credit card and student loan. (Leaving only car and house loans for debt.)  This is a high bar, but I’m going to attempt it.

Year In Review

December 31, 2009

So long, 2009.  Don’t let the doorknob hit ya where the good Lord split ya.

It’s been a hell of a year, and although there was a lot of wonderful (see also, the rearing of two little marmots from 3 to 15 months) there was a lot of death and dementia and stench of cat urine.  Let’s have more of the former, and a whole bunch less of the latter in 2010, ok?

In review:

The first sentence of the first post for each month:

January: In which I make a few New Year’s Resolutions, so that I’ll have something to laugh at myself for by the end of April.

February:  Just let Emma roll off of the bed (as I was situating Chloe on the nursing pillow.)

March: The babies have begun to notice one another this week.

April: Half a year.  How in the heck did that happen?

May: New nicknames: Hivey Rose (Chloe + amoxicillin = rash central), Tenacious E (who knew that she would/could fuss for so long at the absolute horror of being trapped in her carseat?) and the Toothful One (Chloe, first tooth yesterday – right lower incisor.)

June: Eight months old.  Whoa.

July: Has it really been three weeks since I posted?

August: Ah, August.  It’s a big month Chez Snarkpot, with the infants turning the big 1-0 (months, that is) and me turning, gulp, 30.

September: Tempus is definitely fugiting.

October: My little monkeys are a year old!

November: In 2006, I did NaNoWriMo.

December: Fourteen.  It sounds so…toddlerish.
