Piper started limping last night, and I took her in to see the vet this morning, and damn if she hasn’t torn her ACL (ok, I think it’s the CCL in dogs, but I’m stuck in human mode.)  She’s on anti-inflammatories (doggy Vioxx) and feeling better, but we have to get the dang thing fixed, apparently.  Given her age (4) and generally active temperament, I think  it’s worthwhile, but I really don’t want to put her through it, and the money isn’t a small issue.

She goes in on Tuesday for an exam and x-rays under sedation (hard to get her leg to relax enough, otherwise, despite her excellent behavior as a patient today.)  I’m considering going for a second opinion at Big State U’s vet department.  We’ll see.

Anyone with personal experience, I’d love to hear it.  Piper is a 4 year old, generally healthy, 20ish lb Scottie, likes to go on walks and chase squirrels, nothing too strenuous.  (This is starting to sound like a personal ad – she also likes pina coladas, and walks in the rain…)

No experience with dog injuries (yet)…but hope the x-rays and second opinion yield enough info to decide what the right treatment plan is.

Oh no! Poor pup! I hope it ends up being something that will heal without surgery! Yikes… both for Piper and your pocketbook!

Our Golden Retriever had to have both of her’s replace. She is a bigger dog than your breed and older but I had to do it, she is our furbaby. She was at the vet’s overnight. Came home with an incision and stitches. No steps for several months. She takes Rimadyl, an arthritis med and now has to take glucosamine supplements. But all the work is worth it.
