Bread and Circuses

… iam pridem, ex quo suffragia nulli uendimus, effudit curas; nam qui dabat olim imperium, fasces, legiones, omnia, nunc se continet atque duas tantum res anxius optat, panem et circenses.

(Juvenal, Satire 10.77–81)
… Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses.

“Do not blame Caesar, blame the people of Rome who have so enthusiastically acclaimed and adored him and rejoiced in their loss of freedom and danced in his path and gave him triumphal processions…

Blame the people who hail him when he speaks in the Forum of the ‘new, wonderful good society’ which shall now be Rome’s, interpreted to mean ‘more money, more ease, more security, more living fatly at the expense of the industrious.’ Julius was always an ambitious villain, but he is only one man.”

– Cicero

The barbarians aren’t at the gates.  They’re already within them.  I haven’t really been afraid until the last few weeks, but the fear is creeping in.  And on its heels, outrage and anger at what’s being done to my country, to the hardworking people that I know and love, and to my children’s future.

My only real consolation is that we have the farm out in the country near Mayberry, and we can head out there and “hunker down” and live in a bartering microeconomy, comes the revolution.  And in the meantime, I’m praying a lot, and saving my pennies.  And buying a Glock.

Barbarians? Why are you afraid? Finally, for once. I am not.

Amen to everything you said. You are not alone in your opinions, even if they’re not popular. Cheers for posting it.

  3. Kim Says:

Agreed…sigh.. these are some scary times.

As harmonie said above, thank you for posting your opinions, no matter how unpopular they may be.

DH is insisting we spend one afternoon a month at the shooting range practicing on the 9mm we have for home protection. Still scares the bejesus out of me that we have a loaded gun in the house! DH has also spoken of a bartering economy. How’s a small piece of gold for a month’s worth of bread and eggs?

  5. Elaine Says:

Oh, I am so with you on EVERYTHING you said. I’ve decided that is the best part of having moved out to the country — we can survive and barter if it comes to it.

  6. tried to post a day or so ago..forget what happened to prevent it. i am in complete agreement with you. these are very frightening times. the people have abdicated all personal responsibility and clamor for the government to give them that which is already rightfully theirs. oh and i recently bough my own, first handgun, a Ruger LCP. kid you not.
