Two Weeks

I can’t believe they’re two weeks old already!  Today was another sunny, perfect fall day, a lot like the day that they were born.  Not that I was allowed out on their birthday, but I do recall looking out the window.

Emma’s doing beautifully.  She’s up to 3 lbs 13 oz now, and is learning to take bottles.  She hasn’t finished one yet (the requirement to be allowed to breastfeed) but is getting close.  She’s out of the isolette and into the open crib with Chloe, and has her PICC line out.  Just an NG and monitors left!  She’s the sweetest, snuggliest baby.  She rarely cries, preferring to just look at you incredulously if you’re doing something she doesn’t like, and loves to just be held and watch the world go by.  I’m hoping that she finishes a bottle soon, so that we can start breastfeeding.

Chloe is doing well, too.  She’s broken the 4 lb mark (4 lbs 2 oz) and finished her first bottle on the 15th, only her second day of taking bottles.  She’s an absolute chow hound.  She’s given breastfeeding a try three times now, with decent to really good results.  She took almost an ounce (based on weights) on her first try!  Nothing quite that impressive since, but still.  She’s a very alert baby, wants to take it all in, and apparently missed the memo that she’s a preemie.  She’s pretty opinionated, and not shy about letting us know when she’s upset, but she’s easily soothed once the problem’s fixed.

They’re starting to make noises about sending them home, although that’s mostly coming from the nurses, whereas the NP that I spoke with a couple of days ago didn’t seem like it was coming up all that soon (they’re both still having occasional apneas and bradys, she was talking about getting them off of caffeine before going home, etc.)  Either way, I think they’ll be home in the next two weeks, which thrills and terrifies me at the same time.

I’m nesting like a crazy person, and am pretty much healed up from my c/s.  Still a little sore (along the lines of having worked out too much the day before) but not bad.  I’m now down 27 lbs from before their birth, which is -14 from pre-pregnancy.  Who knew that having twins was such a good weight-loss plan?  I’m going to try on my pre-pg jeans today.  We’ll see how that goes.  The hormonal/emotional stuff is better the past few days.  Not that it’s perfect, or that I’m not still getting choked up over silly things, but it’s getting better.  And then, of course, there’s my new job as human dairy bar.  I’m regularly pumping a good 30+ oz a day.  Now if I can just maintain a good supply and get the babes breastfeeding from the tap, I’ll be a happy woman.

How wonderful! Grow babies grow! I can’t wait to see those babies in person. You do realize I’m going to stalk you, right? But in a friendly, I’ll-bring-a-lasagna type of way 🙂

It sounds like they’re doing wonderfully!

Good luck with the breastfeeding. As someone who has nursed one baby and has been nursing twins for a whole 3 and a half weeks…it’s definitely a lot of hard work…but totally worth it.
