Nesting, Part 1

The pickles are pickling in their lime-water (lime as in the chemical, not the citrus fruit.)  Piper’s curled up in the corner chair in the office, and I’m sitting down for the first time since 9 a.m.  It was a *wonderful* day.

I hit the farmer’s market first thing (despite a little rain shower) and scored 20 lbs of tomatoes, 7 lbs of cucumbers, 8 lbs of zucchini, 2 lbs of jalapenos and 10 lbs of apples for a grand total of $35.   Then off to the grocery for the more pedestrian items – sugar, steaks, beer – and a great 98 cents/lb sale on peaches.

This week’s kitchen agenda:

Peach jam
Bread & Butter pickles (in progress)
Tomato sauce
Salsa
Apple butter
Shredded zucchini in the freezer (for bread)
Peaches in the freezer
Apple pie

The rest of the day was spent shopping with H until the middle of the evening (good times, and I managed to pick up a few more canning jars & the pickling lime,) then putting the pickles on to soak overnight.  Oh, and Piper enjoyed her snack of a couple of cucumber ends, if anyone wondered.  Yes, she still is the “Hoover” as I haven’t found an edible item that she refuses.

The best news of all is that H has agreed to do the insulation work for me (I’m doing some work on her house in exchange) – isn’t she a saint!!!!  Tomorrow will be church, decorating the house for fall, cleaning out a closet or two, working on the pickles some more, and some gardening.  Stay tuned!
