Apparently lightning sometimes does strike twice, because we had two separate individuals turn up in the ER within hours of each other, with complaint of “struck by lightning” recently and the incidents were totally unrelated, and both pretty freaky. (No one standing out on a hill, or flying a kite, or anything.) We think they’ll both be [...]

Piper started limping last night, and I took her in to see the vet this morning, and damn if she hasn’t torn her ACL (ok, I think it’s the CCL in dogs, but I’m stuck in human mode.) She’s on anti-inflammatories (doggy Vioxx) and feeling better, but we have to get the dang thing fixed, [...]

Current infected ear census in this household: 3 (Emma only has one sore one.)
Current hours of crying tonight prior to said discovery and treating with numbing drops and sweet, sweet amoxicillin: 2
Visits to my place of employment in search of a decent otoscope with infant-sized speculum: 1

Medical Morality, Part 2
Posted in Politics, Work on April 20, 2009 | 4 Comments »
I hadn’t revisited the Medical Morality poll on healthcare providers providing abortions, what with the ginormous drama that is my grandmother’s illness, but since things have momentarily stabilized, here goes.
I’m really interested to know, in particular, three things. Please address any of the questions in comments – and if you prefer, make up a name and email [...]

Thank you, IRS, for coming through with my tax refund, which allows me to pay off the IVF (only $700 left on that loan anyway) and my rather large credit card balance (6 months of bedrest/maternity leave and no wages = significant cash flow problems.) Ah, the joys of an improved debit sheet.
The best part? Now I [...]
Family Drama, Part the Second

We’ve made some progress. Grandma was transferred to a really lovely nursing facility today, and we’ve found (we think) an assisted living sort of spot for Great-Aunt. Cat Lady Aunt hasn’t been involved much or even visited the hospital much, as of course it’s all too hard for her to deal with, perils of Pauline, [...]

As y’all know, my grandmother (the sharp, independent, super-helpful one) was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer on the 6th. She was feeling a bit unsteady on her feet and having some significant back pain, so came into my ER to be evaluated, and the cancer was discovered and she was admitted that night. She did [...]
Happy Easter!

I’m taking the duckies to church, opening Easter baskets with them, trying for a good afternoon nap (pleasepleaseplease) and making ham, deviled eggs and potato salad for supper. And did I mention working both Saturday and Sunday nights?
Scariest Bunny Ever

Actually, Emma loved him (big drooly grins, a rarity for her except when watching Mama do some kind of antics and/or in close proximity to the nursies) and Chloe warmed up after a bit. I was a little nervous, frankly, and would have wigged out at the creepy mask entirely if I hadn’t seen a [...]

Weight check (in the ER, on our way home from 6-North visiting great-grandma): Emma = 13#4 oz, Chloe = 12#10 oz.
They’re growing big and strong! This puts them both in the 25th to 50th percentiles for adjusted age. Just dandy by me.
