Girl Smiley

I’ve been waiting and waiting for Emma to smile.  She’s an inquisitive little thing, and loves to study anything and everything that crosses her path (the waitress at the Mexican joint we went to for lunch was veeery interesting to her) but she hasn’t been smiling.
Chloe, of course, has been grinning at anyone/everyone for weeks, [...]

Crybaby

Does it make me a horrible parent that I let Emma cry tonight for about 10 minutes at being put to bed?
I know that her cry was the “I want to be re-binked endlessly or better yet held for hours while I sleep” cry, rather than the “something’s really wrong like a crocodile gnawing on my leg” [...]

Dark Cloud

I worked the last two nights, and I swear I had a dark cloud over my head.  I use the age & sex of the patient, plus the chief complaint (all visible on our tracking board) to decide whether the patient’s an appropriate acuity patient for me as a PA (with three docs available.)  Our [...]

An Early Feminist Speaks

No matter what the motive, love of ease, or a desire to save from suffering the unborn innocent, the woman is awfully guilty who commits the deed. It will burden her conscience in life, it will burden her soul in death, but oh, thrice guilty is he who, for selfish gratification, heedless of her prayers, [...]

Medical Clearance

We frequently do something in the ER called medical clearance.  Some other agency (the jail, the psych unit down the road, the police) sends us a person that they believe is pretty much OK for their services, but something about him/her makes them tetchy.
For instance, I had a patient the other night who’d taken (drumroll [...]

Inauguration

The cast of characters was pretty much as expected.  The speech fit the usual inaugural mode.  The poetry was hideous as usual, and the prayers were characteristic of those delivering them.
The only interesting things to me were:
Is it Cheney, or Mr. Potter?

And Aretha’s awesome hat.  The hat was my personal favorite part of the entire [...]
